Abstract
Cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino) has been widely used as a folk medicine. It was previously found that the alcoholic extract of cactus showed anti-inflammatory activity. In the present study, anti-angiogenic effects of the methanolic extract and its subtractions was investigated using adjuvant-induced pouch granuloma model in mice. The methanolic extract showed a significant anti-angiogenic effect. Among subtractions, the hexane subtraction was the most effective in anti-angiogenic activity. These results suggest that cactus contains potent anti-angiogenic principles in addition to its anti-inflammatory effect.
